ABOUT US

The Society of Business Communicators was formed in 1980 as a cooperative venture between the School of Communication at the Queensland Institute of Technology - the forerunner of QUT - and industry professionals.

The founding President was QIT lecturer Rod Miller and meetings were originally held at the George Street campus. During the 80s boom time, meetings were moved to uptown locations and the Society arranged many social events for communication professionals.

In 1996, the events slowed down, enthusiasm waned and a review was needed. The Public Relations Institute of Australia (PRIA) had started up, competing for the PR professionals in the SBCQ client base.

The SBCQ approached Patsy McCarthy and Caroline Hatcher from the Organisational Communication School at QUT for assistance. Patsy and Caroline saw an opportunity to revive the organisation. They redefined SBCQ with less emphasis on PR and more on internal communication and other aspects of organisational communication. They gathered a committee and relaunched SBCQ in 1996.

The revived organisation was successful in winning support from professional communicators in government and business seeking opportunities to network and improve their business skills.
